I'm just curious. Do any of you mock up your UI designs in Photoshop? I used to for my few few full UI's with textures but haven't bothered with it since.

Seems like overkill imo. Simply because I usually get ideas while I'm inside the game, not when it's a mock up.

Also, it's easier to edit in game rather than in photoshop.

However, I do know that Shiny (Fundamental UI) did this, and his UIs usually look really good. Here's an example

But I think it's only worth doing if you're going to create custom graphics.

I only do if I'm making some abit out of ordinary, usually like a different style of health bar, I used to do it more with discord art was around because could make some really unique cool stuff, no so much anymore

I live and breathe PS when it comes to my UI work. Even if it's just a simple modification to a texture, or rounding a square or making a whole new UI layout, I take full advantage of what the application has. Using my wacom tablet, I'm able to "draw" out designs and styles that I think might work for me and perhaps for others, but once I get them done and implement the idea, they don't work out so well. I'm constantly using PS as a brainstorming board for myself and others that like my work.

I couldn't live without PS. I'm not a fan of custom graphics UIs, but it's just so much faster and easier to arrange and modify all my UI elements rather than in-game. Mind you, I'm only talking about basic layout, sizes and positioning. All the fine-tuning and color/texture/font choices are done in-game. But all this goes a lot faster once I have a basic layout figured out.

Photoshop has no use in the art of ui mock ups, unless you're making custom graphics as stated before. It is alot easier to move things around inGame than in Photoshop, especially if you're just making a fast mock up where the different elements should be - Otherwise a pen and some paper should do just fine.

Most UIs these days got the same mock up anyway. Minimap / Grid in the middle, chat and combat log beside these and uniframes above to each side. And honestly, it's getting boring to watch the same UI over and over again but with different textures. - But, again, that's a different chitchat ;)

I beg to differ. When you use Lua-only addons such as oUF and LitePanels, creating layouts in PS is infinitely faster. Then again, I've been working with PS mockups for a while, so it may seem easier to me because of this too. The end result (the UI) is the only thing that matters anyway.

And I've said it before but I'll say it again: there's a reason why most UIs look the same. It's just the most accessible and easy to use layout. It works, and it works good. That should always come first, not innovation or "fun". You can make the most original and pretty pink/neon green custom graphic UI ever, but in the end you wouldn't use that in a raid and you know it.

Dang, I'm getting off-topic. Photoshop FTW.

Love your previous post Haylie, I do use photoshop, not mainly for to many textures but to help me with lua based add ons, or to make a new bar style when I just can't find the one I need. It's pretty understandable how annoying it would be to turn on the game then off again just to check or fix a thing here and there. I have used photoshop for years, and not just in WoW, but for helping with web designing, coding, the whole shabang(sp?).

Since I suck at photoshop I never use it. The basic design floats around in my head and when I'm actually making it I'm constantly adapting the UI so it works better.

For LUA based addons where you do not have an inGame gui, working with textures or graphics, then photoshop is kick ass. But when you do have the gui, then it's not.

And, I'm a photoshop geek, I've worked with the shizz since 4.0 for a living while developing websites for both companies and private persons. It's just overkill to use photoshop to make a mockup that easier viewable inGame, and it gives you a better feel of how it work live.

This is partially true. I never said that It has to be awesome graphics or anything like it, neither fancy colors or strange textures. It's just plain boring to see that everyone has the same mock up of a UI layout - And no, I do not find it the most useful layout.

For the HL2 UI I did everything in game.

For the following UI, which I never completed (but did make the unitframes in-game once I finished designing them in Photoshop), I obviously used Photoshop to come up with the initial design:
